Which path of self discipline would you choose?

1) Pain of discipline which comes from sacrifice and growth OR

2) Pain of regret which comes from the easy road and missed opportunities.

Self Discipline needed in two areas:

1) EMOTIONS

Effective leaders recognise that our emotional reactions are our own RESPONSIBILITY.There is no true freedom without self-discipline.

2) TIME

How effectively our minutes are used? MAXIMISE THE USE OF OUR TIME.

-- Create long and short term goals

-- Plan to achieve goals

-- Desire that motivates us to continue working to accomplish the goals.

ADDICTION

Everything involved in addiction is good. Addictive behaviors seem natural to those capturedby them.

The Seduction of Addiction : SENSATION IS EVERYTHING---> as long as u feel happy, tats the most impt.

The Gift of Pain

- Pain reminded Adam to look for Eve. Before the Fall, pain was a sensation; after the Fall, pain became acatastrophe.

- Every desire has discomfort with it, and every painful physical sensation carries with it a powerful warning.

ADDICTION IS THE LEGACY OF UNADDRESSED PAIN.

PAIN+PLEASURE = ADDICTION

Pain was intended to wake us to the needs and threats of life but addiction mismanages it.Take the pain away, the addiction loses its strength.

Loneliness is painful. For by its very nature when a person is tempted, they have turned inward to an appetite to find relief and pleasure. Real people complicate temptation.Appetites were morally neutral as gifts of God. Its is what we do with them that matters!

CONDEMNATION---> CONFUSION---->DELIVERANCE

No matter where a Christian is in sin and addiction, he or she cannot be closer to God than they are right now.

We do not lose the presence of God. We are the inner sanctuary of God!! Sense of God's withdrawal produces HOPELESSNESS AND HELPLESSNESS.

THE CYCLE OF ADDICTION

PAIN(NEGATIVE MOODS) eg. shame, loneliness, boredom, high anxiety, bitterness

becomes

DISASSOCIATION (using mismanaged pleasure to drown the pain)

becomes

FANTASY WORLD (it justifies the rush into appetite)

--- the most dangerous n powerful weapon in addiction

--- the inner world becomes self contained

--- gives permission for the pain, encourages and enslaves the person.

becomes

INITIAL ACT

--- mindlessness is what is needed.

--- goal is to not interfere with, but instead to heighten the pleasure for the person

becomes

ACTING OUT!!!

FEAR AND DISCOURAGEMENT KEEP US FROM DOING THE RIGHT THINGS.

Let no fear hinders us from reaching our goals nor discouragement dampens our spirits. :)

It is so easy to get bombarded with the noise of our circumstances. Not only are we pressuredinto decisions by others, but the voice of our ego also deafens our ability to listen to Godwith a totally honest heart. It takes courage to listen to God with a totally honest heart. Ittakes even greater courage to follow through on what we hear.

Sometimes it is not about choosing right and wrong decision. It is about having the courage to seeand follow through with the decision that had been whispering in our heart all along.

For example,

When I first went into teaching at the instruction of the Lord, I lost touch with the syllabus.And guess what I hated to teach most??? SCIENCE.

At that time, I had a class of 2 sec two students, teaching them science 2 hours every week. And every time, this gal always asked me things I dunno, and when I couldnt answer, she would justlaugh mockingly. And almost every lesson, I would excuse myself to go toilet to cry to God...

Each time I asked God, "Papa God, do I really have to continue?"

Then a reply will come, "Yes"I would say, "fine. You asked me to go, You take care of the results."Then each time, I dried my tears and went out to teach. Never was I so weak and ill-prepared inmy entire life.

Then one day, the gal came into class n kept sobbing in tears. In my heart, I wantedto go n hug her, but my mind was thinking "she likes to mock at me, she would probably reject myhug. I be so stupid to love a person who dislikes me"... But I asked God what should I do.

Then He replied, "Hug her and show her you love her."I said fine. I stopped my teaching, went to her side, took some tissues and simply hug her... jUSTlet her cry in my arms... From that day, she never mocked at me again.

By end of 3 months, both of them scored A1 for their science!!! haha.. Thats the result of a weak crying teacher and a strong and powerful God.

Compassion without accountability produces sentimentalism.

Accountability without compassion is harsh and heartless.

Compassion teamed with accountability is a powerful force to excel.

Teachers, this is a very important lesson to me.

All of us are softhearted, it is very easy for us to want to help everyone in our lives. But we are not SAVIORS.

I remember my dad likes to tell me, "Even God can only help those who want to be helped. So before we canchange for the better, we must first want to change." A friend also told me, "Dont give a person fish, teach him how to fish. And if he doesnt want to learn, let him starve but dont let him die.

"It is the same thing for our students. Most of our students are producing good results or shown excellentimprovements. And if you look at the attitude of these ppl, there is one common thing: they want to changeand willing to pay the price for the change.

So if we want to help the student with love and compassion, we need the student to be accountable to us.This is why we need to see some parents and want all results to be updated with us every term. They needto know their failure and their victories are not their own business only, we committed our time and effortsso we have the right to call for accountability. In my eyes, when they fail, I fail. When they win, I win.

And in my eyes, all of them should win cos we are made more than conquerors...

We are responsible for the effectiveness and efficiency for our time. For those who dont want to beaccountable, we need to spend time behind the scenes to pray cos we cant change anyone but God can.We dont have to give up on them or condemn them, we simply have to put in more efforts to pray n bless them.

Some ppl would say, pray pray until when.... hee.... I learnt this "Pray until God speaks." cos Every word thatGod speaks will never return empty handed.

So my role is to pray until deep in my heart, I know by faith that "it's done. it's won." Then I will go and sing Hallelujah, praise the Lord.

Take for example,

Few years ago, I taught a p6 gal in a class. When I taught her, she cried n felt very stressful. She came in endJune to prepare for mid october PSLE when maths, science n chinese failed very badly. only english borderlinepassed. She was scared of being accountable to me too. At that time, I prayed more than I pray now! haha...each time, I would pray to God how I can help her... then I would know what to do.Then 5 weeks before PSLE n few days before prelim exams, her dad wants me to personally coach herchinese cos she scored only 25/100 in her mock exam. I felt so stressed, and I waited until I felt God speaksHis blessing into this situation. First two lessons very tough, she couldnt take my strictness and she criedvery hard in lessons. Then after first two lessons, her prelim chinese scored 50/100. She started seeing hope.Then we continued another 16 hours of hard drill. and PSLE, she scored B for her chinese! It was a tough run with her. Since then, she told me she felt confident to study by herself n she did it.

Praise God. Hallelujah.
